BALLET

Beginners to advanced professional level. Syllabus: Royal Academy of Dance (RAD). Centre Stage Dance and Drama follows the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) graded examination syllabus and both the RAD and Imperial society of Teachers of Dance (ISTD) syllabi for the vocational grades. The RAD grades are divided into 3 sections – Classical ballet, Free movement and Character work.  The ISTD focuses on the same aims as the RAD but introduces Free Work. Ballet is taught in a disciplined environment with attention given to correct technique, posture, an appreciation of music and how it relates to dance as well as a sense of space, performance and importantly, enjoyment. Pointe work is introduced at the discretion of the teacher and not before a student is experienced and physically strong enough to develop onto pointe. Ballet3Children may take examinations from the age of 5 years old but if a student does not wish to enter an exam, she/he will be taught in the same dedicated manner and will move into the next class with the children who have gone through the examination process.

FREESTYLE/STREET JAZZ

Age 5-14. Non-syllabus free-work Street Jazz classes. Using appropriate current music. At present we hold 4 freestyle classes a week with ages ranging from 5 – 14. These classes are “freer” than the Modern Dance classes. The students still warm up, limber and stretch their bodies but learn dances to today's, up to the minute music. We do not enter children for examinations. The children who attend these classes also perform in the local community – at the Oxshott May Day festivities at the sports club, in Christmas Fairs and the Leatherhead Theatre. Street

SENIOR CONTEMPORARY DANCE

contemporaryPerfect for those planning to take GCSE/A Level Drama. Contemporary dance is very popular at vocational level. It incorporates elements from several dance styles and is particularly expressive. Contemporary is perfect for those planning to take GCSE/A Level Dance, and for those who love to experience a sense of real freedom of movement. There are many different philosophies in contemporary dance. Centre Stage teaches the most rewarding:
  • Ballet technique, with no strictness on body lines and with a greater range of movement.
  • Use of body weight represented by fall and recovery; suspension and succession.
  • Breathing and impulse control, represented by contraction and release.
  • Ability to change direction dramatically within the body and in space.
  • Strength and flexibility of both mind and body, with strong, controlled leg work.
  • Using the floor in innovative and inspiring ways.
  • Correct ways to be lifted, including contact work and trust exercises.

JUNIOR CONTEMPORARY DANCE

MODERN DANCE

Age 5 and upwards. Advanced standard professional level. Syllabus: ISTD. In Modern Dance we aim to equip students with a well limbered body within their physical capabilities, an appreciation and feel of rhythm and the knowledge of space awareness, dynamics, relaxation, accent, and a sense of performance - all combined with ease of movement. Boys have a different style of dance and some of their exercises are especially targeted to their physique. We have, therefore a Boy's Modern class when appropriate. We follow the ISTD syllabi and the minimum age to take examinations is 5 years. The grading system results are Distinction, Merit and Pass. There are 3 sections to the syllabi - warm up and technical exercises, rhythm section and amalgamations. The teacher arranges a dance for the students. We structure the classes in a disciplined environment but our ultimate goal is to give enjoyment to the students and to give them confidence in their future lives. Modern1

DRAMA

Developing confidence & performing skills. LAMDA accreditation classes available. CentreStage Dance and Drama holds Drama classes on Saturday mornings. Children who only want to develop their drama skills are very welcome to join our sessions. The Junior class develop listening, observation and improvisation skills through games and exercises. They learn to act and react with others in the class and to work as a team as well as develop independent thinking. They are taught to be sincere and believable in everything they tackle. When they are confident in these skills, they may work on a script aimed at their level of understanding. The Senior group develop the skills they have learnt in the Junior class with the addition of tackling more difficult scripts, working outside their comfort zone and building on relationships with their peers. The drama teacher aims to build on the student's acting skills and confidence with a sensitive and caring approach in a disciplined environment. One of the main aims of the drama department is to give the children the necessary skills for their development in their future lives. Drama is an integral part of any major production at CentreStage. The students can also perform in small studio shows. Drama3
