Ballet

Centre Stage Dance and Drama follows the Royal Academy of Dance graded examination syllabus and both the Royal Academy of Dance and Imperial society of Teachers of Dance syllabi for the vocational grades.

The Royal Academy of Dance grades are divided into 3 sections – Classical ballet, free movement and character work.  The Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing focuses on the same aims of the RAD but introduces free work. 

Children may take examinations from the age of 5 years old but if a student does not wish to enter an exam, he/she will be taught in the same dedicated manner and will move into the next class with the children who have gone through the examination process.

Ballet is taught in a disciplined environment with attention given to correct technique, posture, an appreciation of music and how it relates to dance as well as a sense of space, performance and importantly, enjoyment.

Pointe work is introduced at the discretion of the teacher and not before a student is experienced and physically strong enough to develop onto pointe.

Centre Stage Dance and Drama follows the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing syllabi (ISTD). Children can start taking examinations at the age of five. There are 5 sections in the syllabus - limbering, rhythm, dance movements and combination steps. The candidates will also show a dance choreographed by their teacher. The grading system results are Distinction, Merit, Pass.

By teaching Modern Dance we aim to equip students with a well limbered body within their physical capabilities, an appreciation and feel of rhythm and the knowledge of space awareness, dynamics, relaxation, accent, a sense of performance - all combined with ease of movement.

Boys have a different style of dance and some of their exercises are especially targeted to their physic. We have, therefore a Boy's Modern class. At present we have 8 boys who take modern and/or freestyle classes.

We have a policy that examinations are not compulsory and if a child does not wish to enter an exam, the teachers will work with the student in the same dedicated manner and the child will go to the next class with the candidates who do wish to take the examination.

Freestyle/Street Jazz Dance

At present we hold 4 freestyle classes a week with ages ranging from 5 – 14. These classes are “freer” than the Modern Dance classes. The students still warm up, limber and stretch their bodies but learn dances to modern, up to the minute music. We do not enter children for examinations who come to these classes. The children who attend these classes also perform in the local community – they will be performing at the Oxshott May Day festivities at the local sports club and have performed in Christmas Fairs in the area.

Modern

As with the Modern Dance, we follow the ISTD syllabi and the minimum age to take examinations is 5years. The grading system is the same. There are 3 sections to the syllabi - warm up and technical exercises, rhythm section and amalgamations. The teacher arranges a dance for the students.

The teacher's aim is to instill a highly developed and sensitive approach to rhythm and to perform and interpret different styles of music, a good technique and a sense of confident performance skills.

In tap, classes are a mix of both boys and girls. Children can decide against taking examinations if they wish.

We structure the classes in a disciplined environment but our ultimate goal is to give enjoyment to the students and to give them confidence in their future lives.
